Hexagram 32, Héng (Duration): Line 3

恒卦九三 · 雷风恒 · 中文版

九三:不恒其德,或承之羞,贞吝。

The line (Legge)

The third NINE, undivided, shows one who does not continuously maintain his virtue. There are those who will impute this to him as a disgrace. However firm he may be, there will be ground for regret.

Small Image commentary

'He does not continuously maintain his virtue:' - nowhere will he be borne with.

象曰:不恒其德,无所容也。

In plain words

Not keeping one's virtue constant, one may meet disgrace; holding on brings regret. The third line is strong but not central, restless and unsettled. Confucius quotes this line in the Analects: of someone without constancy, one knows the outcome without consulting an oracle. The Small Image says there is nowhere to stay.

Applying it to your situation

If you often change course halfway, this line suggests other people's trust grows from your constancy. Have you watered down a commitment lately?

Position

A solid (yang) line in the third place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is in its proper place. Its partner is line 6; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Héng changes into Hexagram 40 Xiè (Deliverance). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·恒之解.

The hexagram

Hexagram 32 Héng (Duration). The Judgment: Heng indicates successful progress and no error (in what it denotes). But the advantage will come from being firm and correct; and movement in any direction whatever will be advantageous.
