Hexagram 32, Héng (Duration): Line 1
恒卦初六 · 雷风恒 · 中文版
初六:浚恒,贞凶,无攸利。
The line (Legge)
The first SIX, divided, shows its subject deeply (desirous) of long continuance. Even with firm correctness there will be evil; there will be no advantage in any way.
Small Image commentary
'The evil attached to the deep desire for long continuance (in the subject of the first line)' arises from the deep seeking for it at the commencement (of things).
象曰:浚恒之凶,始求深也。
In plain words
Seeking depth and permanence from the start; holding on brings misfortune; nothing is gained. The first line is at the beginning of the hexagram of duration, yet rushes for depth instead of proceeding step by step. The Small Image says it seeks depth at the very start.
Applying it to your situation
If you are asking a lot of a relationship or a project from the outset, this line suggests lasting things take time. Are you asking too much, too fast?
Position
A broken (yin) line in the first place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is not in its proper place. Its partner is line 4; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.
If this line moves
With this line moving alone, Héng changes into Hexagram 34 Dà Zhuàng (Great Power). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·恒之大壮.
The hexagram
Hexagram 32 Héng (Duration). The Judgment: Heng indicates successful progress and no error (in what it denotes). But the advantage will come from being firm and correct; and movement in any direction whatever will be advantageous.
