Hexagram 24, Fù (Return): Line 4

复卦六四 · 地雷复 · 中文版

六四:中行独复。

The line (Legge)

The fourth SIX, divided, shows its subject moving right in the centre (among those represented by the other divided lines), and yet returning alone (to his proper path).

Small Image commentary

'He moves right in the centre (among those represented by the other divided lines), and yet returns alone:' - his object is to pursue the (proper) path.

象曰:中行独复,以从道也。

In plain words

Walking in the middle of the group, returning alone. The fourth line is in the middle of five yin lines, and only it corresponds to the first; it returns on its own. The Small Image says this is following the way.

Applying it to your situation

If people around you are taking another road, this line suggests you can return to the right way on your own. How much courage does it take to keep your own direction?

Position

A broken (yin) line in the fourth place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is in its proper place. Its partner is line 1; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Fù changes into Hexagram 51 Zhèn (The Arousing Thunder). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·复之震.

The hexagram

Hexagram 24 Fù (Return). The Judgment: Fu indicates that there will be free course and progress (in what it denotes). (The subject of it) finds no one to distress him in his exits and entrances; friends come to him, and no error is committed . He will return and repeat his (proper) course. In seven days comes his return. There will be advantage in whatever direction movement is made.
