Hexagram 16, Yù (Enthusiasm): Line 3

豫卦六三 · 雷地豫 · 中文版

六三:盱豫,悔。迟有悔。

The line (Legge)

The third SIX, divided, shows one looking up (for favours), while he indulges the feeling of pleasure and satisfaction. If he would understand!--If he be late in doing so, there will indeed be occasion for repentance.

Small Image commentary

'He looks up (for favours), while he indulges the feeling of satisfaction; there will be occasion for repentance:' - this is intimated by the position not being the appropriate one.

象曰:盱豫有悔,位不当也。

In plain words

Looking upward for enjoyment brings regret; being slow to see this also brings regret. The third line is neither central nor correct and sits right below the fourth line, depending on its favour for its pleasure. The Small Image says its position is not proper.

Applying it to your situation

If your happiness keeps depending on someone else's mood, this line suggests finding your own footing sooner. How much of your security is in your own hands?

Position

A broken (yin) line in the third place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is not in its proper place. Its partner is line 6; both are yin, so they do not respond.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Yù changes into Hexagram 62 Xiǎo Guò (Small Exceeding). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·豫之小过.

The hexagram

Hexagram 16 Yù (Enthusiasm). The Judgment: Yu indicates that, (in the state which it implies), feudal princes may be set up, and the hosts put in motion, with advantage.
