Hexagram 14, Dà Yǒu (Great Possession): Line 2

大有卦九二 · 火天大有 · 中文版

九二:大车以载,有攸往,无咎。

The line (Legge)

In the second NINE, undivided, we have a large waggon with its load. In whatever direction advance is made, there will be no error.

Small Image commentary

'A large waggon with its load' refers to the (virtue) accumulated (in the subject of the line), so that he will suffer no loss (in the conduct of affairs).

象曰:大车以载,积中不败也。

In plain words

A great wagon for loading; there is somewhere to go, and no fault. The second line is strong and central and corresponds to the fifth; it is able to bear heavy responsibility, like a great wagon carrying a heavy load. The Small Image says that even piled high within, nothing is damaged.

Applying it to your situation

If you have been entrusted with a great deal, this line suggests you are able to carry it, so go ahead. What can your "wagon" carry, and what should you refuse?

Position

A solid (yang) line in the second place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is not in its proper place. It holds the centre of the lower trigram. Its partner is line 5; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Dà Yǒu changes into Hexagram 30 Lí (The Clinging Fire). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·大有之离.

The hexagram

Hexagram 14 Dà Yǒu (Great Possession). The Judgment: Da You indicates that, (under the circumstances which it implies), there will be great progress and success.
