Hexagram 9, Xiǎo Chù (Small Taming): Line 3
小畜卦九三 · 风天小畜 · 中文版
九三:舆说辐,夫妻反目。
The line (Legge)
The third NINE, undivided, suggests the idea of a carriage, the strap beneath which has been removed, or of a husband and wife looking on each other with averted eyes.
Small Image commentary
'Husband and wife look on each other with averted eyes:' - (the subject of line three is like a husband who) cannot maintain correctly his relations with his wife.
象曰:夫妻反目,不能正室也。
In plain words
The cart body comes apart from its axle; husband and wife turn their eyes away from each other. The part named here joins the cart body to the axle. The third line is strong but not central and, close to the yin fourth line, contends with it, like a cart falling apart or a couple falling out. The Small Image says husband and wife fall out because the household cannot be kept in order.
Applying it to your situation
If you are at odds with someone close to you, this line suggests mending the connection between you first, before deciding where to go. What most needs repairing between you?
Position
A solid (yang) line in the third place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is in its proper place. Its partner is line 6; both are yang, so they do not respond.
If this line moves
With this line moving alone, Xiǎo Chù changes into Hexagram 61 Zhōng Fú (Inner Truth). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·小畜之中孚.
The hexagram
Hexagram 9 Xiǎo Chù (Small Taming). The Judgment: Xiao Xu indicates that (under its conditions) there will be progress and success. (We see) dense clouds, but no rain coming from our borders in the west.
