Hexagram 9, Xiǎo Chù (Small Taming): Line 1

小畜卦初九 · 风天小畜 · 中文版

初九:复自道,何其咎,吉。

The line (Legge)

The first NINE, undivided, shows its subject returning and pursuing his own course. What mistake should he fall into? There will be good fortune.

Small Image commentary

'He returns and pursues his own path:' - it is right that there should be good fortune.

象曰:复自道,其义吉也。

In plain words

Returning to one's own way: what fault could there be? Good fortune. The first line is strong and low; it wants to go up but is held back by the fourth line, so it returns to its own path. The Small Image says returning to the right way is fortunate in principle.

Applying it to your situation

If your progress is blocked, this line suggests that going back to your own path is not a step backwards. What direction did you first set out in?

Position

A solid (yang) line in the first place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is in its proper place. Its partner is line 4; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Xiǎo Chù changes into Hexagram 57 Xùn (The Gentle Wind). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·小畜之巽.

The hexagram

Hexagram 9 Xiǎo Chù (Small Taming). The Judgment: Xiao Xu indicates that (under its conditions) there will be progress and success. (We see) dense clouds, but no rain coming from our borders in the west.
