Hexagram 64, Wèi Jì (Before Completion): Line 5

未济卦六五 · 火水未济 · 中文版

六五:贞吉,无悔,君子之光,有孚,吉。

The line (Legge)

The fifth SIX, divided, shows its subject by firm correctness obtaining good fortune, and having no occasion for repentance. (We see in him) the brightness of a superior man, and the possession of sincerity. There will be good fortune.

Small Image commentary

'(We see) the brightness of a superior man: - 'the diffusion of that brightness tends to good fortune.

象曰:君子之光,其晖吉也。

In plain words

Steadfastness brings good fortune, no regret: the light of the noble person; there is good faith: good fortune. The fifth line is yielding and central in the place of honour, the ruler of the upper trigram of brightness; it humbly employs the second line and is bright and sincere. The Small Image says the noble person's light shines, and that is fortunate.

Applying it to your situation

If you are in a position to influence others, this line suggests showing them light and good faith. What light would you like others to see in you?

Position

A broken (yin) line in the fifth place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is not in its proper place. It holds the centre of the upper trigram. Its partner is line 2; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Wèi Jì changes into Hexagram 6 Sòng (Conflict). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·未济之讼.

The hexagram

Hexagram 64 Wèi Jì (Before Completion). The Judgment: Wei Ji intimates progress and success (in the circumstances which it implies). (We see) a young fox that has nearly crossed (the stream), when its tail gets immersed. There will be no advantage in any way.
