Hexagram 62, Xiǎo Guò (Small Exceeding): Line 5
小过卦六五 · 雷山小过 · 中文版
六五:密云不雨,自我西郊,公弋取彼在穴。
The line (Legge)
The fifth SIX, divided, (suggests the idea) of dense clouds, but no rain, coming from our borders in the west. It also (shows) the prince shooting his arrow, and taking the bird in a cave.
Small Image commentary
'There are dense clouds, but no rain:' - (the line) is in too high a place.
象曰:密云不雨,已上也。
In plain words
Dense clouds but no rain, coming from our western border; the duke shoots with a corded arrow and takes the one in the cave. The fifth line is yin in the place of honour: yin is too strong and yin and yang are out of balance, so no rain falls; it can only seek out a worthy person below. The Small Image says yin is already above.
Applying it to your situation
If something has been brewing a long time without coming to anything, this line suggests looking lower for someone who can help. Whom should you go and "bring out"?
Position
A broken (yin) line in the fifth place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is not in its proper place. It holds the centre of the upper trigram. Its partner is line 2; both are yin, so they do not respond.
If this line moves
With this line moving alone, Xiǎo Guò changes into Hexagram 31 Xián (Influence). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·小过之咸.
The hexagram
Hexagram 62 Xiǎo Guò (Small Exceeding). The Judgment: Xiao Guo indicates that (in the circumstances which it implies) there will be progress and attainment. But it will be advantageous to be firm and correct. (What the name denotes) may be done in small affairs, but not in great affairs. (It is like) the notes that come down from a bird on the wing - to descend is better than to ascend. There will (in this way) be great good fortune.
