Hexagram 59, Huàn (Dispersion): Line 5

涣卦九五 · 风水涣 · 中文版

九五:涣汗其大号,涣王居,无咎。

The line (Legge)

The fifth NINE, undivided, shows its subject amidst the dispersion issuing his great announcements as the perspiration (flows from his body). He scatters abroad (also) the accumulations in the royal granaries. There will be no error.

Small Image commentary

'The accumulations of the royal (granaries) are dispersed, and there is no error:' - this is due to the correctness of the position.

象曰:王居无咎,正位也。

In plain words

Great commands go out like sweat; the king's stores are dispersed: no fault. The fifth line is central and correct in the place of honour, the ruler of the hexagram; in a time of dispersal, its command, once given, cannot be taken back, like sweat, and it gives out its wealth to gather people's hearts. The Small Image says the king is without fault because he is in his proper place.

Applying it to your situation

If you need to bring people together, this line suggests keeping your word and being willing to share. What could you offer to bring people back together?

Position

A solid (yang) line in the fifth place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is in its proper place. It holds the centre of the upper trigram. Its partner is line 2; both are yang, so they do not respond.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Huàn changes into Hexagram 4 Méng (Youthful Folly). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·涣之蒙.

The hexagram

Hexagram 59 Huàn (Dispersion). The Judgment: Huan intimates that (under its conditions) there will be progress and success. The king goes to his ancestral temple; and it will be advantageous to cross the great stream. It will be advantageous to be firm and correct.
