Hexagram 46, Shēng (Pushing Upward): Line 2
升卦九二 · 地风升 · 中文版
九二:孚乃利用禴,无咎。
The line (Legge)
The second NINE, undivided, shows its subject with that sincerity which will make even the (small) offerings of the vernal sacrifice acceptable. There will be no error.
Small Image commentary
'The sincerity of the subject of the second NINE, undivided,' affords occasion for joy.
象曰:九二之孚,有喜也。
In plain words
With sincerity, even a simple offering is favourable: no fault. The second line is strong and central and corresponds to the fifth, reaching upward with sincerity. The Small Image says the sincerity of the second line brings joy.
Applying it to your situation
If you are communicating upward, this line suggests sincerity matters more than show. What is the true intent you want to convey?
Position
A solid (yang) line in the second place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is not in its proper place. It holds the centre of the lower trigram. Its partner is line 5; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.
If this line moves
With this line moving alone, Shēng changes into Hexagram 15 Qiān (Modesty). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·升之谦.
The hexagram
Hexagram 46 Shēng (Pushing Upward). The Judgment: Sheng indicates that (under its conditions) there will be great progress and success. Seeking by (the qualities implied in it) to meet with the great man, its subject need have no anxiety. Advance to the south will be fortunate.
