Hexagram 40, Xiè (Deliverance): Line 5

解卦六五 · 雷水解 · 中文版

六五:君子维有解,吉;有孚于小人。

The line (Legge)

The fifth SIX, divided, shows (its subject), the superior man (= the ruler), executing his function of removing (whatever is injurious to the idea of the hexagram), in which case there will he good fortune, and confidence in him will be shown even by the small men.

Small Image commentary

When 'the superior man executes his function of removing (whatever is injurious to the idea of the hexagram),' small men will of themselves retire.

象曰:君子有解,小人退也。

In plain words

The noble person is able to bring deliverance: good fortune; even petty people come to trust it. The fifth line is yielding and central in the place of honour, corresponds to the second, and can lift the danger. The Small Image says when the noble person brings deliverance, the petty people withdraw.

Applying it to your situation

If you need to resolve a deadlock, this line suggests using straightforward means, and the harmful elements will fall away. How could you let the problem come apart by itself?

Position

A broken (yin) line in the fifth place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is not in its proper place. It holds the centre of the upper trigram. Its partner is line 2; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Xiè changes into Hexagram 47 Kùn (Exhaustion). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·解之困.

The hexagram

Hexagram 40 Xiè (Deliverance). The Judgment: In (the state indicated by) Jie advantage will be found in the south-west. If no (further) operations be called for, there will be good fortune in coming back (to the old conditions). If some operations be called for, there will be good fortune in the early conducting of them.
