Hexagram 39, Jiǎn (Obstruction): Line 4
蹇卦六四 · 水山蹇 · 中文版
六四:往蹇,来连。
The line (Legge)
The fourth SIX, divided, shows its subject advancing, (but only) to (greater) difficulties. He remains stationary, and unites (with the subject of the line above).
Small Image commentary
'To advance will (only be to) encounter (greater) difficulties; he remains stationary, and unites (with the subject of the line above):' - that is in its proper place and has the solidity (due to it in that position).
象曰:往蹇来连,当位实也。
In plain words
Going on meets obstruction; coming back, one joins with others. The fourth line is at the start of the upper trigram of danger; not strong enough alone, it joins with the third line below and together they get through. The Small Image says its position is proper and solid.
Applying it to your situation
If you cannot get through a hard time alone, this line suggests joining with those around you. With whom could you make common cause?
Position
A broken (yin) line in the fourth place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is in its proper place. Its partner is line 1; both are yin, so they do not respond.
If this line moves
With this line moving alone, Jiǎn changes into Hexagram 31 Xián (Influence). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·蹇之咸.
The hexagram
Hexagram 39 Jiǎn (Obstruction). The Judgment: In (the state indicated by) Jian advantage will be found in the south-west, and the contrary in the north-east. It will be advantageous (also) to meet with the great man. (In these circumstances), with firmness and correctness, there will be good fortune.
