Hexagram 39, Jiǎn (Obstruction): Line 1

蹇卦初六 · 水山蹇 · 中文版

初六:往蹇,来誉。

The line (Legge)

From the first SIX, divided, we learn that advance (on the part of its subject) will lead to (greater) difficulties, while remaining stationary will afford ground for praise.

Small Image commentary

'Advancing will conduct to (greater) difficulties, while remaining stationary will afford ground for praise:' - the proper course is to wait.

象曰:往蹇来誉,宜待也。

In plain words

Going on meets obstruction; coming back meets praise. The first line is at the start of obstruction, with the danger of the upper trigram ahead; it sees the danger and stops, knowing when to hold back. The Small Image says it is right to wait.

Applying it to your situation

If you have just run into difficulty, this line suggests stopping to wait for the right moment is not retreat. What could you prepare while you wait?

Position

A broken (yin) line in the first place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is not in its proper place. Its partner is line 4; both are yin, so they do not respond.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Jiǎn changes into Hexagram 63 Jì Jì (After Completion). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·蹇之既济.

The hexagram

Hexagram 39 Jiǎn (Obstruction). The Judgment: In (the state indicated by) Jian advantage will be found in the south-west, and the contrary in the north-east. It will be advantageous (also) to meet with the great man. (In these circumstances), with firmness and correctness, there will be good fortune.
