Hexagram 34, Dà Zhuàng (Great Power): Line 1

大壮卦初九 · 雷天大壮 · 中文版

初九:壮于趾,征凶,有孚。

The line (Legge)

The first NINE, undivided, shows its subject manifesting his strength in his toes. But advance will lead to evil,--most certainly.

Small Image commentary

'He manifests his vigour in his toes:' - this will certainly lead to exhaustion.

象曰:壮于趾,其孚穷也。

In plain words

Strength in the toes: setting out brings misfortune, that is certain. The first line is at the bottom, strong but lowly and eager to advance. The Small Image says such advance will surely run out.

Applying it to your situation

If you have just gained a little strength and want to charge ahead, this line suggests building your foundations first. Is your base solid enough for the next step?

Position

A solid (yang) line in the first place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is in its proper place. Its partner is line 4; both are yang, so they do not respond.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Dà Zhuàng changes into Hexagram 32 Héng (Duration). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·大壮之恒.

The hexagram

Hexagram 34 Dà Zhuàng (Great Power). The Judgment: Da Zhuang indicates that (under the conditions which it symbolises) it will be advantageous to be firm and correct.
