Hexagram 27, Yí (Nourishment): Line 5

颐卦六五 · 山雷颐 · 中文版

六五:拂经,居贞吉,不可涉大川。

The line (Legge)

The fifth SIX, divided, shows one acting contrary to what is regular and proper; but if he abide in firmness, there will be good fortune. He should not, (however, try to) cross the great stream.

Small Image commentary

'The good fortune from abiding in firmness' is due to the docility (of the subject of the line) in following (the subject of the line) above.

象曰:居贞之吉,顺以从上也。

In plain words

Going against the norm; staying put and steadfast brings good fortune; one should not cross the great river. The fifth line is the ruler and ought to nourish the world, but being weak it can only rely on the top line to do so, hence "against the norm". The Small Image says its good fortune comes from yielding and following the worthy one above.

Applying it to your situation

If you hold a post but lack the strength for it, this line suggests relying on someone more capable rather than forcing risky moves. Whom should you ask to help hold things up?

Position

A broken (yin) line in the fifth place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is not in its proper place. It holds the centre of the upper trigram. Its partner is line 2; both are yin, so they do not respond.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Yí changes into Hexagram 42 Yì (Increase). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·颐之益.

The hexagram

Hexagram 27 Yí (Nourishment). The Judgment: Yi indicates that with firm correctness there will be good fortune (in what is denoted by it). We must look at what we are seeking to nourish, and by the exercise of our thoughts seek for the proper aliment.
