Hexagram 22, Bì (Grace): Line 3

贲卦九三 · 山火贲 · 中文版

九三:贲如濡如,永贞吉。

The line (Legge)

The third NINE, undivided, shows its subject with the appearance of being adorned and bedewed (with rich favours). But let him ever maintain his firm correctness, and there will be good fortune.

Small Image commentary

'The good fortune consequent on his ever maintaining firm correctness' is due to this, - that to the end no one will insult him.

象曰:永贞之吉,终莫之陵也。

In plain words

Adorned and glossy; lasting steadfastness brings good fortune. The third line sits between two yin lines and is adorned by them; it could easily sink into splendour, but if it stays steadfast for the long term, no one will wrong it. The Small Image says in the end no one can override it.

Applying it to your situation

If you are in a glossy, successful phase, this line suggests not letting the shine go to your head: staying steady over time matters most. When the glow fades, what will you have left?

Position

A solid (yang) line in the third place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is in its proper place. Its partner is line 6; both are yang, so they do not respond.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Bì changes into Hexagram 27 Yí (Nourishment). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·贲之颐.

The hexagram

Hexagram 22 Bì (Grace). The Judgment: Bi indicates that there should be free course (in what it denotes). There will be little advantage (however) if it be allowed to advance (and take the lead).
