Hexagram 2, Kūn (The Receptive): Line 5
坤卦六五 · 坤为地 · 中文版
六五:黄裳,元吉。
The line (Legge)
The fifth SIX, divided, (shows) the yellow lower garment. There will be great good fortune.
Small Image commentary
S. 'The Yellow lower-garment; - there will be great good fortune:' - this follows from that ornamental (colour's) being in the right and central place.
象曰:黄裳元吉,文在中也。
In plain words
A yellow lower garment: great good fortune. Yellow is the colour of the centre, standing for the middle way; the lower garment stands for modesty. The fifth line holds the place of honour at the centre of the upper trigram, yet it is yielding and keeps to the middle and to modesty. The Small Image says the beauty lies within.
Applying it to your situation
If you are in a position of influence, this line suggests working through balance and gentleness rather than pressure. How can you stay calm and low-key while standing high?
Position
A broken (yin) line in the fifth place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is not in its proper place. It holds the centre of the upper trigram. Its partner is line 2; both are yin, so they do not respond.
If this line moves
With this line moving alone, Kūn changes into Hexagram 8 Bǐ (Holding Together). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·坤之比.
The hexagram
Hexagram 2 Kūn (The Receptive). The Judgment: Kun (represents) what is great and originating, penetrating, advantageous, correct and having the firmness of a mare. When the superior man (here intended) has to make any movement, if he take the initiative, he will go astray; if he follow, he will find his (proper) lord. The advantageousness will be seen in his getting friends in the south-west, and losing friends in the north-east. If he rest in correctness and firmness, there will be good fortune.
