Hexagram 19, Lín (Approach): Line 6 (top)
临卦上六 · 地泽临 · 中文版
上六:敦临,吉无咎。
The line (Legge)
The sixth SIX, divided, shows the advance of honesty and generosity. There will be good fortune, and no error.
Small Image commentary
'The good fortune consequent on the advance of honesty and generosity' is due to the will (of the subject of the line) being set on the subjects of (the first two lines of) the inner (trigram).
象曰:敦临之吉,志在内也。
In plain words
Approaching with generosity: good fortune and no fault. The top line is at the height of the hexagram; it has no correspondence below, yet generously supports the two yang lines there. The Small Image says its aim lies within, with the two yang lines of the lower trigram.
Applying it to your situation
If you are in a high position, this line suggests treating those who come after you generously. What could you leave for those who follow?
Position
A broken (yin) line in the top place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is in its proper place. Its partner is line 3; both are yin, so they do not respond.
If this line moves
With this line moving alone, Lín changes into Hexagram 41 Sǔn (Decrease). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·临之损.
The hexagram
Hexagram 19 Lín (Approach). The Judgment: Lin (indicates that under the conditions supposed in it) there will be great progress and success, while it will be advantageous to be firmly correct. In the eighth month there will be evil.
Previous: Line 5
