Hexagram 18, Gǔ (Repairing the Spoiled): Line 4

蛊卦六四 · 山风蛊 · 中文版

六四:裕父之蛊,往见吝。

The line (Legge)

The fourth SIX, divided, shows (a son) viewing indulgently the troubles caused by his father. If he go forward, he will find cause to regret it.

Small Image commentary

'He views indulgently the troubles caused by his father:' - if he go forward, he will not succeed.

象曰:裕父之蛊,往未得也。

In plain words

Tolerating what the father spoiled; going on brings regret. "Tolerating" means letting things slide. The fourth line is weak and cannot set things right. The Small Image says going on this way leads nowhere good.

Applying it to your situation

If you keep putting off a problem you know must be solved, this line suggests delay only makes it harder. What have you been unwilling to face?

Position

A broken (yin) line in the fourth place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is in its proper place. Its partner is line 1; both are yin, so they do not respond.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Gǔ changes into Hexagram 50 Dǐng (The Cauldron). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·蛊之鼎.

A recorded case from Takashima

Gu to Ding: an heir who cannot hold the family fortune: A friend asked about the affairs of a wealthy household and received the fourth line of Gu, "indulging the father's corruption; going on brings shame". Takashima described a weak head of house who lets things rot; the friend said the adopted heir had indeed lost the fortune.

The hexagram

Hexagram 18 Gǔ (Repairing the Spoiled). The Judgment: Gu indicates great progress and success (to him who deals properly with the condition represented by it). There will be advantage in (efforts like that of) crossing the great stream. (He should weigh well, however, the events of) three days before the turning point, and those (to be done) three days after it.
