Hexagram 15, Qiān (Modesty): Line 2

谦卦六二 · 地山谦 · 中文版

六二:鸣谦,贞吉。

The line (Legge)

The second SIX, divided, shows us humility that has made itself recognised. With firm correctness there will be good fortune.

Small Image commentary

'The good fortune consequent on being firm and correct, where the humility has made itself recognised, is owing to the possessor's having (the virtue) in the core of his heart.

象曰:鸣谦贞吉,中心得也。

In plain words

Modesty that is heard of; steadfastness brings good fortune. "Heard of" means its reputation spreads. The second line is yielding, central and correct; its modesty comes from within, and so people naturally praise it. The Small Image says this is something truly gained in the heart.

Applying it to your situation

If you are praised for being modest, this line suggests letting your modesty come from within, not as a performance. Is your modesty genuine, or a pose?

Position

A broken (yin) line in the second place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is in its proper place. It holds the centre of the lower trigram. Its partner is line 5; both are yin, so they do not respond.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Qiān changes into Hexagram 46 Shēng (Pushing Upward). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·谦之升.

The hexagram

Hexagram 15 Qiān (Modesty). The Judgment: Qian indicates progress and success. The superior man, (being humble as it implies), will have a (good) issue (to his undertakings).
