Hexagram 10, Lǚ (Treading): Line 6 (top)
履卦上九 · 天泽履 · 中文版
上九:视履考祥,其旋元吉。
The line (Legge)
The sixth NINE, undivided, tells us to look at (the whole course) that is trodden, and examine the presage which that gives. If it be complete and without failure, there will be great good fortune.
Small Image commentary
'There will be great good fortune,' and that in the occupancy of the topmost line: - this is great matter for congratulation.
象曰:元吉在上,大有庆也。
In plain words
Look back over the path you have trodden and examine what went well and badly; if you can turn back round in full, there is supreme good fortune. "Turn round" may also mean looking back over the whole circuit, complete in every part. The top line is the end of the hexagram, the time to look back and take stock. The Small Image says the supreme good fortune at the top brings great blessings.
Applying it to your situation
If a stretch of your life is coming to an end, this line suggests looking back over it carefully: what went well, and what could change. What is the lesson most worth keeping from this journey?
Position
A solid (yang) line in the top place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is not in its proper place. Its partner is line 3; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.
If this line moves
With this line moving alone, Lǚ changes into Hexagram 58 Duì (The Joyous Lake). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·履之兑.
The hexagram
Hexagram 10 Lǚ (Treading). The Judgment: (Lu suggests the idea of) one treading on the tail of a tiger, which does not bite him. There will be progress and success.
