Hexagram 1, Qián (The Creative): Line 4
乾卦九四 · 乾为天 · 中文版
九四:或跃在渊,无咎。
The line (Legge)
In the fourth NINE, undivided, (we see its subject as the dragon looking) as if he were leaping up, but still in the deep. There will be no mistake.
Small Image commentary
'He seems to be leaping up, but is still in the deep:' - if he advance, there will be no error.
象曰:或跃在渊,进无咎也。
In plain words
Perhaps it leaps up, perhaps it stays in the deep; either way there is no fault. "Perhaps" leaves the matter open: advancing and holding back are both possible. The fourth line has just entered the upper trigram and left the security of the lower one, so it stands between going forward and staying put. The Small Image says that going forward brings no fault.
Applying it to your situation
If you are at the point of deciding whether to take a step, this line does not decide for you. It only suggests that trying the leap is fine, and coming back is no failure either. What would each choice, stepping forward or stepping back, need in order to work?
Position
A solid (yang) line in the fourth place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is not in its proper place. Its partner is line 1; both are yang, so they do not respond.
If this line moves
With this line moving alone, Qián changes into Hexagram 9 Xiǎo Chù (Small Taming). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·乾之小畜.
The hexagram
Hexagram 1 Qián (The Creative). The Judgment: Qian (represents) what is great and originating, penetrating, advantageous, correct and firm.
