Hexagram 1, Qián (The Creative): Line 1
乾卦初九 · 乾为天 · 中文版
初九:潜龙,勿用。
The line (Legge)
In the first (or lowest) NINE, undivided, (we see its subject as) the dragon lying hid (in the deep). It is not the time for active doing.
Small Image commentary
'The dragon lies hid in the deep; - it is not the time for active doing:' - (this appears from) the strong and undivided line's being in the lowest place.
象曰:潜龙勿用,阳在下也。
In plain words
The dragon is still hidden in the deep water; do not act yet. "Hidden" means under the water. "Do not act" does not mean never: it means this is not yet the time to use your strength. The Small Image explains that the yang force is still at the very bottom and not ready to show itself. Traditionally the line describes someone whose gifts have not yet come to light, or whose time has not yet come.
Applying it to your situation
If what you are working on has only just begun and the conditions are not yet in place, this line suggests putting your effort into building up rather than rushing to prove yourself. What basic skill most needs strengthening right now? "Do not act" is about waiting for the right moment, not giving up.
Position
A solid (yang) line in the first place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is in its proper place. Its partner is line 4; both are yang, so they do not respond.
If this line moves
With this line moving alone, Qián changes into Hexagram 44 Gòu (Coming to Meet). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·乾之姤.
The hexagram
Hexagram 1 Qián (The Creative). The Judgment: Qian (represents) what is great and originating, penetrating, advantageous, correct and firm.
